NIA makes first arrest over 2024 attack on Indian Reserve Battalion post in Manipur

The National Investigation Agency (NIA) Sunday made its first arrest in connection with the January 2024 attack on an Indian Reserve Battalion (IRB) post in the Manipur border town of Moreh in which two police personnel had been killed.

Wangkhem Somorjit Meetei of the 6th Manipur Rifles and Takhellambam Sieleshwor Singh of the 10th IRB had died in the attack in Tengnoupal district.

In a statement, the NIA said that Thangminlar Mate, alias Lenin Mate, a resident of Tengnoupal, was arrested in connection with the case from Assam’s Silchar.

“Mate’s affiliation to any militant group is not clear yet… The Silchar court has given NIA the transit remand custody of the accused, the first person to be arrested in the case for production before the agency’s special court in Guwahati,” the agency said.

Also on Monday, the NIA stated that it arrested a third militant in connection with the murder and burning of 31-year-old Zosangkim in Manipur’s Jiribam in November 2024. The arrested person is Rajkumar Maipaksana, associated with proscribed valley-based insurgent group PREPAK.

Last week, the NIA arrested two persons associated with insurgent groups UNLF and KYKL in connection with this case, which had triggered a cycle of violence in Jiribam in last November.
