Calling the decision of the 20 opposition parties to skip the inauguration ceremony of the new Parliament building as “unfortunate”, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar on Friday said there has to be a limit to the amount of politics that can be done.

Jaishankar, who is on a two-day visit to Gujarat, said the inauguration of the new Parliament building should be celebrated as a festival by the entire nation.

“I believe that the inauguration of the new Parliament building should be taken as a festival of democracy and it should be celebrated in that spirit. It should not be made a subject of controversy. It is unfortunate if it becomes a subject of controversy,” Jaishankar told reporters at Rajpipla town of Narmada district.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi is scheduled to inaugurate the ceremony on May 28. A political row has erupted after a total of 20 Opposition parties announced their “collective decision” to boycott the inauguration ceremony, saying PM Modi’s decision to inaugurate it himself, “completely sidelining” President Droupadi Murmu, insults the high office of the President and violates the letter and spirit of the Constitution.

“Some people are trying (to create a controversy). But I believe that there should be a limit to indulging in politics. At least on such occasions, the entire country should come together and celebrate this festival,” Jaishankar added.

The External Affairs Minister is scheduled to visit four villages of Narmada District that has been adopted by him under the Sansad Adarsh Gram Yojana.
