A 22-year-old Muslim man’s application for conversion to Hinduism has kicked up a storm in Uttar Pradesh’s Moradabad district after his wife alleged that he wanted to convert to marry a Hindu woman. She also said her husband opted for the conversion route to avoid a triple talaq case and stay clear of ‘love jihad’ charges.

In his application to the district magistrate (DM), Aamir Ali sought security in the apprehension of attack from his community members over the matter.

“As per the law, there is no need for any permission from an officer if adults are willing to change their religion. But in this case, his wife, too, has moved an application. She claimed that her husband was playing tricks with the existing laws. I have asked the additional district magistrate (ADM) and the senior superintendent of police to look into the issue to ascertain the truth before taking any action,” said DM Shailendra Kumar Singh.

The Moradabad police said Aamir Ali works as a sales executive in a private firm in Ghaziabad and is a resident of the Prince Road under the Mughalpura police jurisdiction.

“We have been informed that he had moved an application to the higher-ups seeking permission to convert but we have yet not received any orders in this regard. A police constable has been placed outside his residence to ensure security,” said Amit Kumar, the incharge of Mughalpura police station.

Ali’s wife Gulphansa, 19, who has a four-month-old daughter with him, addressed the media Tuesday and claimed her husband had been having a relationship with the Hindu woman since 2014.

“I was married in February 2022 and learned about his relationship six months later. I objected, and he assured me he would distance himself from her. His girlfriend has threatened to make their affair a case of ‘love jihad’. My family will lodge a case under the triple talaq law against him if he divorces me. This explains why he is playing tricks by seeking permission for conversion,” she said. Triple talaq, the process of divorce under the Sharia law where a husband can divorce his wife by pronouncing ‘talaq’ three times, has been outlawed in India and made a criminal offence.

Gulphansa said she sent a letter to Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath seeking his intervention in the matter.” I am your daughter and do hope that you will come to my rescue to protect your daughter in this issue,” she appealed to the chief minister.

She said she was staying with her parents as Aamir had gone incommunicado with his phone switched off and his house at Prince Road locked from outside.
