AIMING FOR better preparedness in case of massive fires and other similar disasters, municipal commissioner Ajoy Mehta directed chief fire officer P Rahangdale on Saturday to map out all water sources and hydrants. The updated information will then be put up on the Disaster Management Department’s website and the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation’s mobile application.
As per Mehta’s orders, the fire department will have to carry out a survey to check the functionality of fire hydrants.
Earlier this week, a massive fire broke out in a commercial building in Fort area which took more than nine hours to douse. Fire officials had stated that a rare level-five fire or the brigade call was declared that has occurred only twice in the last few years, including the fires that broke out in Kalbadevi and Mantralaya.
Mehta has also ordered assistant municipal commissioners of all the 24 wards to take adequate measures to ensure that the city is open-defecation free by the end of this month. “The commissioner has directed that awareness campaigns be conducted to promote the message of not defecating or urinating in the open. Around 117 locations have been identified as open-defecation spots and mobile toilets will be installed at all the spots,” said a civic official.
Taking stock of the management of solid waste in the city, Mehta stated that all housing societies, hotels and malls that cover an area of 20,000 square metres or more have to mandatorily set up composting units at their premises. All the ward officials have been asked to identify those who have not complied and issue notices to them to ensure that they start processing their wet waste.
Referring to the list of chronic flooding spots identified in the city, Mehta directed the storm water drains department to take necessary measures before May next year to ensure that there is no flooding next monsoon.
