In the video clip, the Congress leader is heard allegedly saying that he would not care if a potential candidate has a few cases pending against him as long as he can win elections.

A war of words has begun between the Congress and the BJP in Madhya Pradesh, this time over a video clip where former Union minister and Congress state chief Kamal Nath is purportedly seen endorsing candidates with criminal background.

In the video clip, the Congress leader is heard allegedly saying that he would not care if a potential candidate has a few cases pending against him as long as he can win elections. “Some people say he has four cases against him. I say let the cases be five. I am unambiguous, I want a winning candidate,” Nath purportedly said.

On Saturday, Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan launched an attack on the opposition party, accusing it of backing criminals. “If this is the politics of the Congress… people are intelligent. They will decide whom to elect by voting on November 28,” he said while retweeting the video which he captioned: “Congress ka haath, apradhiyon ke saath”.

Chouhan’s tweet came on the day his brother-in-law Sanjay Singh Masani joined the Congress. Earlier, Nath had taunted Chouhan over the incident in a tweet.

Congress spokesperson Shobha Oza said the video may have been doctored. She alleged that the ruling party is in the habit of slapping cases against its political adversaries and even farmers. She suggested that Nath may have said something on those lines, but his conversation had been taken out of context by deleting what he said before and after the crucial lines.

While Nath himself did not react to the purported video, Oza said the Chouhan was venting his frustration after suffering embarrassment on personal front.

Even if Nath had said what he has been accused of, Oza said, the BJP has no right to talk of criminalisation of politics because the BJP’s first list was full of candidates facing criminal charges.
