The withdrawal of the southwest monsoon is most likely to commence around September 23, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said on Thursday.
“Conditions are likely to become favourable for the withdrawal of southwest monsoon from some parts of northwest India from September 23,” the Met department said.
Like for the onset, there are defined criteria for declaring the withdrawal of monsoon as well. Key conditions include reduction in rain over the extreme northwest India regions for five days, establishment of anticyclone in low troposphere levels over this region, and reduction in moisture conditions. The normal date for monsoon to begin withdrawal from extreme northwest India regions is September 15.
But due to successive weather systems developed in recent days, the monsoon has been active throughout September. Uttarakhand, Delhi, parts of Gangetic West Bengal, Madhya Pradesh and neighbourhood areas have benefitted from widespread rainfall this week.
Heavy rainfall will continue to lash parts of Chhattisgarh, west Madhya Pradesh and Vidarbha till September 25. Eastern states, too, will receive good rainfall during the upcoming week, the Met department said. Goa, Konkan and coastal Karnataka will experience light to moderate rainfall next week.
