Hitting back at Prime Minister Narendra Modi over recent attacks on “inheritance tax”, an emotional Congress general secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra Thursday said in Madhya Pradesh’s Morena district “my father (Rajiv Gandhi) did not get wealth as an inheritance, but inherited martyrdom.”
“When I brought my father’s remains at the age of 19, I was angry with this country. I sent my father, it was your job to protect him. You returned his pieces wrapped in the Indian Tricolour. I understand what martyrdom means. That anger I understand now, that kind of anger is felt towards those we love,” she said.
Launching an attack on Modi who claimed at a rally in Morena on April 25 that Rajiv Gandhi “abolished the inheritance law that existed earlier to save his property” after his mother Indira Gandhi was assassinated, Priyanka said, “Modi ji cannot understand that my father did not get wealth as an inheritance, but inherited martyrdom. You can understand this feeling because you have sent your sons to the border. But Modiji will not understand this feeling, that same feeling is in my heart,” she said.
On the now-scrapped Electoral Bond scheme, she said, “The Supreme Court said this is a wrong scheme…the list came out and look at who all donated to them (BJP)… remember that in Gujarat a bride collapsed, several people were washed away in the river. The one who made the bridge donated money,” she said.
Meanwhile, at Chirmiri in Chhattisgarh’s Korba, Priyanka alleged that Modi was giving rise to privatisation, labour exploitation and questioned if people want free ration or jobs as she promised to fill up 30 lakh vacancies in government.
Priyanka recalled how her grandmother Indira Gandhi created jobs by nationalising coalfields. “They (BJP) are giving 5 kg ration and Rs 1,200. What do you want? Job or ration? You will choose a job as it makes you self-reliant,” she said.
“When the ration is over, you will again ask from the government. This will make you dependent. That’s the plan. They (BJP) are repeatedly asking for votes based on religion. Tell them to give you jobs and to fill up 30 lakh government vacancies,” she said
For Korba she said, “we will do a survey and open a new coal related industry. We will level the land destroyed due to cast mining and resettle people. We will establish railway connectivity and try to give you four times more compensation compared to the market rate for land acquisition.”
On Hasdeo afforestation, she said, “Hasdeo protest site was burnt down by them (BJP) and they axed 15,000 trees. Billionaires are getting your jal, jungle and zameen but you get nothing.”
