Two militants were killed in Jammu and Kashmir’s Kupwara as the Army and the police launched a joint operation to foil an infiltration bid on Friday night.

The operation was launched in the Gugaldhara forest of north Kashmir’s Kupwara and comes at a time when the sector has seen a spurt in infiltration attempts by militants in recent months.

Sources said that during the operation, the joint team observed some movement in the area and challenged the militants, who opened indiscriminate fire. The joint team of forces retaliated, leading to the death of two militants.

“On 04 Oct 2024, based on intelligence about infiltration attempt, a joint operation by the Indian army and @JmuKmrPolice was launched at Gugaldhar, Kupwara. Alert troops spotted suspicious activity and challenged, leading to exchange of firing with terrorists. Vigilant troops carried out effective fire,” the Army’s Valley-based Chinar Corps posted on X.

In a subsequent post, the Army said two militants were killed in the gunfight. “Two terrorists have been eliminated by the security forces in the ongoing Operation Gugaldhar. War-like stores have been recovered,” Chinar Corps posted.

The Army said that cordon and search operations were continuing in the area.
