Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh Wednesday officially inaugurated and handed over temporary shelter homes to families displaced by the recent communal violence in the state. Around 3,000 pre-fabricated shelter homes have been built at Sajiwa Jail Complex, Imphal East district. At the event, Biren Singh said the rehabilitation of persons displaced owing to the ongoing unrest is of utmost priority to the government. He said that many people from both hill and valley regions had been taking shelter at different relief camps following the unrest that erupted on May 3. For relocating these displaced people, temporary shelter homes are being constructed at different locations, he added. Biren Singh informed that the temporary shelter homes are being constructed at a total cost of around Rs 149 crore, of which an amount of Rs 101 crore had already been disbursed from the Prime Minister’s Office through the Union home minister. Biren Singh said permanent houses will also be constructed at their original sites and a survey has been undertaken for the same. The state has been putting in every effort to restore normalcy, CM Biren Singh said. He expressed hope that normalcy would return soon and gave credit for this to the support of various civil society organizations, churches, women’s organizations, and other stakeholders.
