A number of abandoned houses were set on fire in Moreh town in Manipur on Wednesday and the area also witnessed incidents of firing, though the security personnel brought the situation under control by the afternoon.
Moreh is a town on the Indo-Myanmar border in Manipur’s Tengnoupal district with a mixed population. Many people from the Meitei community were displaced from there during the course of the violence in the recent months.
According to Defence sources, on Wednesday, a mob comprising people from the Kuki-Zomi community tried to steal from the abandoned houses belonging to Meitei people when “challenged” by an Assam Rifles patrol.
The situation was brought under control in a joint effort by the Assam Rifles, the BSF and police, during the course of which, sources said, both sides fired in the air.
Police said that around 15-16 houses were set on fire and that the Forest Guest House in Moreh was partially burnt down as well.
Before this, another incident had taken place in Sapormeina in Kangpokpi district in which two buses used by security forces to transport personnel were torched by a mob. Nine people were arrested in connection with this incident. However, there were no casualties in either of the incidents.
