Four people have been arrested in connection with the May 4 incident so far, and Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh on Thursday said the state government will make efforts towards ensuring capital punishment for those found guilty.

Calling the incident a “crime against humanity”, Singh said the state government will “not remain silent on this heinous crime”.

While the police complaint, on the basis of which the FIR has been registered, states that the women were with police personnel from Thoubal’s Nongpok Sekmai police station when a mob seized them, Singh denied this allegation and pegged it as false.

Singh said an operation is on to book all others involved in the crime. “The state will not leave any stone unturned to book the culprits and award maximum punishment, such as capital punishment,” he said.

“Let this be the last incident,” he said. “We need to create awareness among people of the inhumane nature of such crimes and ensure that such horrifying incidents against women and children do not occur again.”
