Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge Tuesday lashed out at Prime Minister Narendra Modi, calling him a “jhoothon ka sardar (king of liars)” who wanted to “snatch away the Constitution” and “destroy democracy”, and accused him of abusing Rahul Gandhi to hide his own failures of the last 10 years.

“Arre bhai, voh toh jhoothon ka sardar hai (He is the king of lies)… In his first election, he said Congress earned a lot of money. Lots of rich people have stashed their black money in Swiss banks and he would bring back that money and give Rs 15 lakh to each family. Did he say this or not? Did you get it? The Prime Minister lied,” said Kharge

“In 2015-16, he said he would give 2 crore jobs every year. He was supposed to give 10 crore jobs. Did he? How can a Prime Minister lie like this? Third, he said that he would double farmers’ income. Has your income doubled? Toh aise Prime Minister ko agar main jhoothon ka sardar bolunga toh kya galti hai isme (So is it wrong if I call such a Prime Minister the king of liars?),” he added.

Kharge was addressing his first rally at Jagadhri in Haryana’s Yamunanagar in the run-up to May 25 elections for the 10 Lok Sabha seats in the state.

The Congress leader added that he was not against PM Modi, but was against his ideology. “We are fighting against RSS’s ideology. We are fighting against your (Modi’s) wish to snatch away the Constitution. You want to destroy democracy, we are fighting against that…We are fighting this battle to save Constitution and democracy,” Kharge said.

Talking about the the 14-month-long farmers’ agitation on Delhi’s borders that led to the withdrawal of three agri legislations, Kharge said, “PM Modi says ‘Sabka Saath, Sabka Vikas’. Arre tumne sabka saath toh liya, lekin sabka satyanaash kar diya (you took support from everyone and ruined everything)”.

Kharge said that Modi claims that it is because of him that the nation is strengthened today. “We had leaders like Indira Gandhi, who broke Pakistan into two and created a separate country… computerisation, panchayat system were all contributions of Rajiv Gandhi…,” he said.
