Widening the ambit of the incentives for inter-caste marriages, the state government is working on a “forward-looking” legislation, which grants the benefit of a preferential quota or a parallel reservation to the offsprings from such marraiges, provided they possess the required qualification. “The whole idea is to extend benefits of affirmative action in education and jobs to kids born out of inter-caste marriages as a measure to encourage such wedlocks,” a top government source said.
Although the modalities are still being finalised, sources said that the state government’s proposal is also to deposit Rs 2 lakh in the accounts of such children at the time of their birth, which can be used for supporting higher education of the child post matriculation.

While the government presently provides a cash reward of Rs 50,000 to couples from inter-caste marraiges, it hasn’t yielded the desired respond. “It was felt that other arrangements were needed for promoting inter-caste marriages,” a source said, adding, “Dr Bhimrao Ambedkar had advocated such marraiges to end casteism”.
Another measure being deliberated under the reform is to ask educational institutions not to insist on disclosure of caste at the time of enrollment from offsprings of inter-caste marriages. The proposal is also to enhance the cash reward for couples in inter-caste marraiges 10 fold- from Rs 50,000 to Rs 5 lakh.
Social reformer Chhatrapati Shahu Maharaj had kicked off various reforms for promoting inter-caste marriages. The government has also proposed rewards for villages and communities encouraging inter caste weddings.
