Maharashtra: Bus slides off road in Ambenali Ghat, fall prevented by mango tree

Twenty-five people were injured in the accident. According to the police, they are all out of danger.

A Maharashtra state transport bus carrying over 55 passengers fell off the Mahabaleshwar Poladpur Road in Raigad district Wednesday and slid for 20 feet, resulting in injuries to 25 passengers. The police said further descent of the bus was prevented due to a large Mango tree.

According to the Raigad district police, the incident took place at 7.45 pm on Wednesday, when the bus from Akkalkot town in Solapur to Mahad town in Raidad was passing through Ambenali Ghat in the Sahyadri ranges.

Assistant Inspector Suresh Yamghar, the PRO of Raigad police, said, “The accident took place around 14 kilometres from Poladpur town after the driver lost control due to some reason. Breaking the roadside barrier, the bus started sliding on the ghat slope. But the descent was stopped due to a large mango tree. 25 passengers have sustained injuries. They are being treated at local hospitals and are out of danger.”

In August last year, as many as 30 persons were killed after a bus fell into a gorge in the same Ambenali Ghat.
