Prime Minister Narendra Modi called for immediate measures on Wednesday after a stampede-like incident during the Maha Kumbh Mela in Uttar Pradesh’s Prayagraj, where millions of pilgrims had gathered for a holy dip on the occasion of Mauni Amavasya. According to official sources quoted by news agency PTI, PM Modi held a review of the developments with Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath. The two leaders have spoken twice since the incident occurred in the early hours of Wednesday, as authorities scrambled to manage the large crowds at Sangam. “Prime Minister Modi spoke to Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath about the situation at the Kumbh Mela, reviewed the developments, and called for immediate support measures,” an official said. Local authorities fear multiple casualties after chaotic scenes unfolded amid the enormous crowds gathered for the Mauni Amavasya bath, traditionally considered one of the most auspicious days during the Kumbh. Despite the incident, large numbers of devotees continued to arrive at the riverbanks for the ritual, even as the Akharas called off their traditional ‘Amrit Snan’ in light of the situation. Government officials are reportedly working to ensure the safety of pilgrims and avoid further disruptions, as PM Modi and CM Adityanath continue to oversee the response to the incident.
