Local authorities fear multiple casualties after chaotic scenes unfolded amid the enormous crowds gathered for the Mauni Amavasya bath, traditionally considered one of the most auspicious days during the Kumbh. Despite the incident, large numbers of devotees continued to arrive at the riverbanks for the ritual, even as the Akharas called off their traditional ‘Amrit Snan’ in light of the situation.

Government officials are reportedly working to ensure the safety of pilgrims and avoid further disruptions, as PM Modi and CM Adityanath continue to oversee the response to the incident.
