A farewell celebration for a retired government employee in Madhya Pradesh’s Sidhi district took an unexpected turn when the local Station House Officer (SHO) was roused from his sleep because of the loud DJ music and allegedly hauled the revellers into a police jeep.

After news of the January 31 incident spread, police have taken action against the SHO, Pushpendra Mishra.

“In the viral video case under Churhat police station, cognizance has been taken, and the station in charge of Churhat has been penalised by the Deputy Inspector General of Police, Rewa Zone, with the punishment of withholding one year’s salary increment. A detailed investigation of the case is being conducted, and further action will be taken once the investigation report is received,” Sidhi Superintendent of Police Ravindra Verma said.

The retired employee, Ganpati Patel, who worked in the Public Health Engineering department, was being feted by his family and colleagues at a farewell party that included a DJ and musical procession. As the celebratory convoy passed through a government residential colony, the loud music reportedly disturbed the police officer, who had returned from night duty.

In a video, Mishra is purportedly seen forcefully handling Patel’s sons Prakash and Aryan. The video purportedly shows Mishra grabbing the youths by their hair and pushing them into a police vehicle. The alleged incident drew criticism, with the Patel family pleading for justice and claiming that the police response was excessive.

While the Patel family insists that the celebration was a heartfelt farewell for their retired father, Mishra said the four-and-a-half-minute-long viral video “does not depict the full story”.

He claimed that the “complete footage of the incident spans 50 minutes and shows that many individuals at the celebration were intoxicated”. He also alleged that the revellers “assaulted police personnel when they intervened, resulting in injuries to officers”.
