Water level further recedes in main 81 reservoirs

Water levels in India’s main reservoirs declined to 12 percent of capacity in the week to June 17,from 13 percent a week earlier,government data showed.

Water levels in India’s main reservoirs declined to 12 percent of capacity in the week to June 17,from 13 percent a week earlier,government data showed on Friday.

A year ago,water levels in India’s 81 main reservoirs were at 10 percent of total capacity,but the latest reading was lower than the 10-year average.

More water in reservoirs will boost hydropower supply,which accounts for a quarter of India’s total generation capacity,and help irrigate crops after the monsoon season.

On Thursday,India Meteorological Department said the annual monsoon rains were 8 percent below normal in the week to June 16,reflecting slow progress.

The June-September monsoon irrigates 60 percent of farms in the world’s leading consumer and producer of edible oils,sugar,wheat,rice and cotton.
