Water levels in Indias main reservoirs declined to 12 percent of capacity in the week to June 17,from 13 percent a week earlier, government data showed on Friday.
A year ago, water levels in Indias 81 main reservoirs were at 10 percent of total capacity, but the latest reading was lower than the 10-year average.
More water in reservoirs will boost hydropower supply, which accounts for a quarter of Indias total generation capacity, and help irrigate crops after the monsoon season.
On Thursday,India Meteorological Department said the annual monsoon rains were 8 percent below normal in the week to June 16,reflecting slow progress.
The June-September monsoon irrigates 60 percent of farms in the worlds leading consumer and producer of edible oils, sugar, wheat, rice and cotton.
