The UGC today appointed a committee to probe into the allegations of huge capitation fee demanded by two Tamil Nadu-based institutes, including one said to be run by a union minister.

The five-member committee, headed by former AIIMS Director Sneh Bhargava, will look into the media reports that officials of Shree Balaji Medical College and Sri Ramachandra University allegedly demanded capitation fees in the range of Rs 12-20 lakh to give admission to students.

Besides finding the genuineness of the reports about the capitation fee charges, the Committee will also probe into the admission and fee policy of these two institutions,UGC Chairman Sukhadeo Thorat told PTI.

Bharat University of which Balaji Medical College is a constituent unit is said to be run by Minister of State for Information and Broadcasting S Jagathrakshakan. However, the charge has been denied by Jagathrakshakan.
