Prime Minister Manmohan Singh is understood to have sought an explanation from Women and Child Development Minister Krishna Tirath over the picture of a former Pakistani Air Force chief appearing in an advertisement brought out by her ministry.

Highly-placed sources in the ministry said she apprised the Prime Minister of the procedure of taking out such advertisements when she met him on Wednesday.

They said though Tirath has sought two weeks’ time to furnish the inquiry report on the matter, the PMO is pressing for a faster reply.

The sources had earlier said that the minister had not involved Directorate of Advertisement and Visual Publicity (DAVP),the agency responsible for preparing all government ads,at any point during the preparation of the controversial advertisement and had dealt directly with the matter.

The advertisement, published on the occasion of National Girl Child Day on January 24,had the photograph of former Pakistan Air Chief Marshal Tanvir Mahmood Ahmed along with Indian leaders and icons. The faux-pas left the government red-faced,forcing the PMO to issue an apology to the public for the goof-up.
