Amid calls for Kashmir bandh on Thursday, people in Shopian took to the streets after the Jammu and Kashmir High Court granted bail to the four police officers on Friday, including suspended SP Javed Iqbal Matoo,in the rape and double murder case. As the news of bail reached Shopian,52 kms from here, people came out on streets and held demonstrations against the court's order. Shopkeepers pulled their shutters down and all modes of transport went off the road in the township shortly after Friday prayers. Majlis-e-Mushawarat (MeM),an organisation spearheading the agitation against the rape and double murder on the intervening night of May 29/30,criticised the order of the HC and called a strike tomorrow throughout Kashmir. "The four police officers hold the key to mystery behind rape and murder of the two women. They need to be interrogated to unveil the truth," MeM spokesman Mohammad Shafi Khan said. He alleged the police officers were not interrogated so far. "We have decided to call a complete Kashmir bandh tomorrow to protest the court's decision, callousness of the government and negligence of police in handling the case," Khan said.
