Parents have more onus to keep their wards in check: HC

Court asks,"Why cannot the parents counsel their children?"

Parents have the greater onus to keep their wards in check and restrain them from indulging in wayward activities rather than expecting schools to do it for them, the Delhi High Court said today.

Justice Hima Kohli made the remarks while rebuking the father of a class X student of a reputed south Delhi school while hearing his plea against rustication of his son from the school on November 2 for uploading a obscene, morphed picture of his female classmate on a social networking site on October 18.

“Why cannot the parents counsel their children? Why do they expect it from school? What the parents have done in this case,” Justice Kohli asked a flustered father,a businessman, who blurted out to the court that he did not merely rebuke his son for the misdemeanour, but even beat him up.

“It cannot be taken lightly. It is a serious offence. He cannot be treated as innocent,” said the judge as the boy’s father vouched for his son’s innocence.

The judge did not spare even the child and scolded him saying,”What you have done is a serious offence under the IT Act (the Information Technology Act),with three years of jail term and fine up to Rs 5 lakh.”.

The boy, who, virtually on the verge of tears, apologised for his act.
