NSG to set up high frequency signals centre for CWG

The NSG will set up an exclusive "high frequency" signals centre for the upcoming Commonwealth Games here as part of its strategy to secure the sporting extravaganza.

The NSG will set up an exclusive “high frequency” signals centre for the upcoming Commonwealth Games here as part of its strategy to secure the sporting extravaganza.

Official sources said the signals centre would be set up in proximity to a Games venue and would maintain communication between the personnel deployed, the force headquarters and the NSG garrison in Manesar.

“The unit from the Special Ranger Group (SRG) will set up the logistics and communication facilities at the centre with assistance from the technical wing of NSG,” an official said. A team of NSG commandos specialised in anti-sabotage operations and sniper skills will be taking the entire Games related exercise under its cover.

“Commando teams will be deployed during the Commonwealth Games for securing the athletes and the venues. The men will have the best training and weapons,” National Security Guard (NSG) Director-General N P S Aulakh said at the Manesar garrison.

The commandos will be divided into select groups to perform ‘static’ as well as ‘mobile’ guard duties during the Games, which will witness athletes and delegates from at least 30 countries in October next year, sources said. Sources said the elite force also has drawn up an reconnaissance plan of the Games venues and facilities and a deployment pattern will be drawn after studying the data.

As the Games will be spread over 12 days and at different venues, the commandos would be placed in ‘static’ positions here. Athletes and delegates moving across the National Capital Region (NCR) will be covered by mobile ‘black cats’,the sources said.

The commando units will be a fine blend of men drawn from both the anti-hijack and counter-terrorism wings of the force. NSG officials said the force will perform continuous deployment duty after a long time, except for short VIP visits in the national capital and select seminars earlier.

The total number of commandos to be provided for the Games have not been decided as of now and that would be done as per requirement, sources added. The nearly fortnight-long sporting event will be attended by 8,000 athletes,1,00,000 spectators and nearly 30 heads of states.

According to NSG officials, the force will also have the option to use helicopters in case of the need for an “air drop” atop a building.
