Never stated SP would form next govt in UP: Varun Gandhi

He says he merely predicted the complete meltdown of BSP in elections, from which other parties would gain.

BJP MP Varun Gandhi today clarified he had never stated Samajwadi Party would form the next government in Uttar Pradesh.

Referring to his remarks that appeared in various media recently,Gandhi said he had merely predicted the complete meltdown of the BSP in the current elections, from which other parties, including the BJP,would gain.

“I would like to clarify that media reporting of certain statements attributed to me are both incorrect and mischievous. I have never stated that SP would form the next government in Uttar Pradesh.

“I merely predicted the complete meltdown of the BSP in this election and further theorized, that by implication, the seats of other parties may rise,” he said here in a statement.

He said he was not a psephologist and had made the remarks only after getting reports from the media, which suggested that BJP was set to make substantial gains in the state and SP would also fare better in the 2012 assembly polls in the state as compared to last time.

“The only reports I was getting were from the media via exit polls which seemed to suggest that the vote share and seats of the BJP would rise considerably and even the SP would do better than 2007.

“I am not a psephologist and am not interested in predicting election results,” he said.

On his comments about BJP having 55 chief Minister aspirants,Gandhi said,”…I never stated that the BJP had 55 CM aspirants merely stating that unlike the Congress which had a paucity of state leadership, the BJP had at least 55 people who’s leadership was both accepted and respected in the state.”
