Kapil Dev writes to PM for strict anti-corruption law

“I was really pained to see one scam after another come out during the Commonwealth Games in India. Committees after committees were set-up,yet till date no concrete action has been taken on reports,” Dev,the captain of the 1983 World Cup winning cricket team,said.

Several eminent citizens,including Karnataka Lokayukta Justice Santosh Hegde,Arvind Kejriwal,Prashant Bhushan and Shanti Bhushan,have drafted a Jan Lokpal Bill which they claim to be a stronger law as compared to Lokpal Bill floated by the Government.

Hazare,who is supporting the bill,has demanded that a joint committee comprising citizens and ministers be constituted to deliberated and finalise the bill which could be placed before the Parliament.

Supporting Hazare’s stand,Dev in his letter to the Prime Minister has said,”Why can’t we have a strong and independent Lokpal to look into these scams? I consider you as the cleanest politician in recent history and I urge you to give the Jan Lokpal bill to this country.”

Kapil said under existing anti-corruption laws there was little possibility of guilty being penalised.

“I have gone through the latest version of the Jan Lokpal Bill which has been drafted by some of the best legal,judicial,investigative and administrative brains in the country. This Bill seeks to ensure swiftness and certainty of the punishment to the corrupt. If this Bill were enacted,I am confident that it would instill fear in the minds of the corrupt,” the former captain of Indian cricket team wrote.

Meanwhile,Hazare has appealed to people to launch a fast against corruption from April 5.

“We are appealing to the whole nation to observe a day of fast on 5th April and pray to whoever God one believes in,for a corruption-free India. Let the whole nation pray against corruption,” Hazare said.

Echoing the views of social activist Anna Hazare who is planning to launch indefinite hunger strike on the issue from April 5,the legendary cricketer said India needs swift and effective action to tackle corruption.
