A Canadian MP of Indian origin has said fraud marriages confronting Indians have emerged as a serious issue and demanded a system of central registration of marriages and verification of antecedents of those getting married. Ruby Dhalla,who arrived here on the invitation of Lok Bhalai Party Chairman BS Ramuwalia yesterday,said she met 50 women who have been deceived by the NRIs after marriage and assured them of all possible help. She said she would take up the matter of fraudulent marriages in the Canadian Parliament. Dhalla also stated that she had been pressing both the Canadian and India governments to put in place some laws or legal mechanism to check or prevent exploitation of the institution of marriage for fraudulent immigration or exploitation of spouses,especially the girl. In Jalandhar district today,Dhalla donated Rs 10 lakh to the Government Senior Secondary Girls' school in Basti Shekh area and said she has given this amount for better development of the institution,officials said.
