CPM-Cong indulge in blame game over poll violence in Kerala

Hitting back,Balakrishnan dubbed Ramachandran's charge as "utterly absurd without based on any factual evidence to support it".

The civic poll scene in Kerala turned murkier on Sunday with the leaders of the CPI-M and Congress indulging in a no-holds-barred blame game over violence in Kannur district during the first phase of voting.

Firing the first salvo,Congress leader and Union Minister of state for Home Mullappally Ramachandran alleged that what had happened in Kannur and some other parts of North Kerala on Saturday was the result of a CPI-M conspiracy in which state Home Minister Kodiyeri Balakrishnan had a role.

Hitting back,Balakrishnan dubbed Ramachandran’s charge as “utterly absurd without based on any factual evidence to support it”.

Ramachandran, also vice-president of KPCC and hailing from North Kerala, told reporters in New Delhi that the Congress had demanded that Central forces be deployed in parts of Kannur, which was opposed by the LDF Government.

What will be the explanation of state Home Minister and his party on widespread violence and malpractices indulged in by LDF workers in the area, leading to re-polling in eight booths,Ramachandran asked.

Countering the charge,Balakrishnan said the Union Minister’s allegation that polls were fraught with irregularities flew in the face of the simple fact that the area had recorded a very high percentage of voting.

Joining his colleague,CPI-M state secretary Pinarayi Vijayan said the allegations exposed UDF’s scare of losing the polls.

It was actually the UDF workers who created troubles in some pockets in the district as it was clear from the political profile of the areas where re-polling had been issued,he said.

If Ramachandran had advance information that there could be violence during the polls,it was his responsibility as a Central minister to share that with the state government, instead of saying now that the Central forces should have been deployed in the area,Vijayan added.
