Court admits Sanjiv Bhatt bail plea; issues notice to Modi govt

Gujarat govt,DGP asked to file their replies by Tuesday when plea will come up for hearing.

Notices were issued to the Gujarat government and DGP Chitranjan Singh after the Ahmedabad district court admitted IPS officer Sanjiv Bhatt’s bail plea on Monday.

They have been asked to file their replies by Tuesday when the plea will come up for hearing.

Bhatt was arrested on Friday on charges of fabricating evidence and wrongful confinement after a constable who had worked with him in the intelligence bureau in 2002,filed a complaint of the officer forcing him to testify. One of the sections dealing with fabricating evidence, section 194 of the IPC was added later and is a non-bailable section.

A magisterial court refused to give Bhatt’s custody to the police for interrogation because the grounds that the government presented were very weak. So Bhatt was sent to Sabarmati jail,a prison where he was superintendent in 2004.

Bhatt’s wife Shweta had said that she feared for her husband’s life,as he had been handed over to the city crime branch.

On Saturday, the police searched Bhatt’s house for the second time but had to return when Shweta demanded to see a fresh search warrant. She also alleged that police were harassing them, for speaking the truth.
