Ahead of Uttar Pradesh assembly elections,Congress today pleaded with Prime Minister Manmohan Singh to exempt minority education from the ambit of the Right to Education Act.
The plea was made by a delegation led by AICC General Secretary Digvijay Singh which told the Prime Minister that since minority education is covered under the Constitution, the same needed to be exempted from the RTE.
“There are some issues under the Right to Education where the formulation of the syllabus and other things are contentious. That can be resolved by discussions with the minority institutions,” Singh told reporters outside Parliament House.
The delegation, consisting of Congress leaders from Uttar Pradesh, also requested Prime Minister to release the payment of Madrassa teachers pending for 2 to 3 years.
Their plea to the Prime Minister came after their meeting with Human Resources Development Minister Kapil Sibal did not yield any result.
Digvijay Singh said modernisation of Madrassas programme was started when Manmohan Singh was the Finance Minister in P V Narasimha Rao Government.
“Now the payment of teachers for 2,3 years has been pending and there was no resolution despite our meeting with the HRD minister,” he said.
“We met the Prime Minister for a solution to this problem and the Prime Minister has given directions to HRD Ministry and the Finance Ministry to give the payments immediately,” he said.
