The Maharashtra and Karnataka police both approached a Delhi court today seeking the custody of four of the seven Indian Mujahideen operatives,arrested for their alleged roles in various terror strikes,including those at Pune’s German Bakery and Bangalore’s Chinnaswami stadium.
Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Vinod Yadav decided to consider the pleas of the two states on December 21 and till then he extended police custody of all seven accused,saying he was doing so “in the interest of society.”
Yadav extended by six more days,the police custody of suspected IM operatives Mohammed Qatil Siddqui,Gohar Aziz Khumani,Mohammed Adil,Abdur Rehman,Mohammed Irshad,Gayur Ahmed Jamali and Aftab Alam,brushing aside Jamali’s counsel Mobin Akhtar’s query to know the ground of extension.
“It (police custody) can go up to 30 days. The grounds have been mentioned in the application. I am exercising my discretion as of now in favour of the investigating agency considering the larger interest of the society,” the CMM said.
The seven accused are needed to be interrogated further and are to be taken to Andhra Pradesh also to unravel their terror network,said sources in Delhi Police’s Special Team,constituted to assist in solving various unsolved terror blast cases.
Karnataka police sought the custody of three of the seven IM operatives with Bangalore Anti-Terror Sqaud submitting to the Delhi CMM an order of the Bangalore ACMM for the trio’s custody to ascertain their roles in the Chinnaswami Stadium blast in April,2010.
The trio whose custody was sought by Bangalore ATS included Siddqui,Jamali and Alam.
