CBI has arrested a senior Bar Council of India member and an academician for allegedly taking bribe to grant affiliation to a private law college in Ghaziabad with the investigating agency today saying that its sleuths were manhandled by functionaries of a bar association during the raids at the BCI members residence. A mob of 30-40 persons led by president of a bar association,who goes by his first name Saroha manhandled a team of agency sleuths and snatched away the seized doccuments and cash,CBI sources said. The CBI sleuths were roughed up during yesterdays raid at the residential premises of BCI member R S Rana,who was arrested along with an academician Manish Tyagi,one of the members of the advisory body of Global College of Law. Both of them have been sent to three days police remand by a Delhi court today. The agency has filed an FIR with Maurya Enclave police station against Saroha,two other lawyers and others. The CBI has also registered a case against Bar Council of India Vice Chairman R Dhanpal Raj,whose house was also searched. During the search proceedings at the residence of Member,BCI at Pitampura,huge cash,suspected to be a part of illegal gratifications received by him from Member of Ghaziabad-based Law College on earlier occasions,was recovered,CBI sources said. However,while the search proceedings were going on,at around 7 PM,a mob of around 10-15 persons unlawfully assembled in front of his residence, a CBI statement said. It said the people started raising slogans against the CBI team. On the apprehension that search proceedings may be disrupted by the mob,Delhi police personnel were called for after which men from the local police station including the SHO arrived. However,at around 10 PM,the mob which had grown up to 30-40 persons and was being led by Saroha and two advocates,entered the residence of the BCI member, the CBI said. They manhandled and prevented the CBI team from discharging its duties and also snatched away the seized case properties which included the aforesaid cash and other incriminating documents found from the place during the on-going search proceedings, it said. Official sources said the cash amounted to over Rs six lakh. CBI has lodged a complaint in this regard with Delhi Police which has registered an FIR at Maurya Enclave police station against Saroha,two advocates and others under different sections of the IPC.
