FOR THREE sisters from Jaunpur in Uttar Pradesh, there was an extra reason to celebrate Holi on Friday — their selection as police constables was announced just a day before the festival.

Kushboo Singh (24), Kavita Chauhan (22) and Sonali Chauhan (20) are the granddaughters of a freedom fighter, Indrapal Singh Chauhan, who died in 2002.

“We had been preparing, aiming at this selection, for the past four years… Constantly motivating each other since we had no one to look up to for inspiration. All three of us cleared the selection process in our first attempt,” Kushboo Singh told The Indian Express on Saturday.

For the past few years, the three sisters followed a strict routine, cycling 10 km daily to reach a playground, where they practiced rigorously.
Kushboo and Sonali have competed at the national level in kho-kho and marathon, respectively. Kavita is a state-level kabaddi player.

“Our sports coach also motivated us to prepare to join the police force. Another major reason for choosing this path is social media, which portrays the police profession in a way that inspired us to serve the nation and its people with dedication,” added Kushboo.

On Thursday, the Uttar Pradesh Police Recruitment and Promotion Board (UPPRPB) announced the final selection results for Direct Recruitment-2023 to the post of Constable (Civil Police). For 60,244 constable positions, the board received a staggering number of applications – nearly 48 lakh. The written examination and document verification were conducted last year, followed by a physical efficiency test.

“We were eagerly awaiting the physical efficiency test results, which were declared on March 13. A total of 60,244 candidates have been selected for the same number of posts. Next, we will undergo a medical examination, which is expected to be held soon,” said Kushboo Singh.
A police officer with the UPPRPB confirmed their selection, adding that it was under “’dependent of freedom fighter’ quota.”

Kushboo’s father, Swatantra Kumar Chauhan, said, “It is a matter of great pride and an honour for our family that all three of my daughters have been selected as police constables. This will inspire others to recognise that daughters are just as capable as sons.”

Swatantra Kumar said he has always encouraged his daughters to strive for “something significant that would bring pride to the family.”

The three sisters are the first women in their family and village to join the police. “To ensure they stayed focused, I motivated them to participate in sports. All three are exceptionally talented in sports,” he added.

Swatantra Kumar and his wife Chaya Devi also have a son, Prince Chauhan, who is pursuing his graduation course. Kushboo, who married Shivam Chauhan, an engineer, last year, completed her Bachelor of Physical Education after graduation.
