Kerala forms panel to explore possibility of law for safety of emigrants

In the last year’s Loka Kerala Sabha, several participants had urged the government to examine the possibility of enacting a state-level legislation to prevent illegal international recruitment from Kerala

KeralaNORKA officials said the committee was formed considering a spurt in the number of people falling prey to recruitment scams

Kerala government has formed a ten-member committee to look into the possibility of bringing a legislation to ensure safe international migration from the state.

The committee will have the state home secretary, the state DGP, law secretary and the chief executive officer of Non-Resident Keralites Affairs Department (NORKA) as its members.

NORKA officials said the committee was formed considering a spurt in the number of people falling prey to recruitment scams. Although the NORKA has been spreading awareness about illegal recruitment, various agencies in the sector have been trying to exploit the situation, realising the limitations of law.

In the last year’s Loka Kerala Sabha, a global forum of expatriates from the state, several participants had urged the government to examine the possibility of enacting a state-level legislation to prevent illegal international recruitment from Kerala. The 10-member committee will also look into possibility of framing a draft policy note.
