Kerala CM Pinarayi hosts FM Sitharaman for breakfast meet today

Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan is hosting Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman for a breakfast meeting in the capital on Wednesday as he hopes to mend fences with the Union government in the last year of his second term.

This is a marked shift from Vijayan’s stance from February last year, when the CM and his entire cabinet had protested in Delhi against the Narendra Modi government over “discrimination” in allocation of funds to the state.

Congress leaders claimed the meeting, to be held at Kerala House, was to secure a tacit understanding between the CPI(M) and the BJP for the forthcoming local body polls in the state. Vijayan, however, appears unfazed by any prospect of a political controversy as there is not much room for dissent against him in his party.

After his breakfast tete-e-tete with Sitharaman, Vijayan will attend the politburo meeting at the CPM headquarters, where the top leadership will discuss an organisational roadmap to take on the BJP.

The draft resolutions, once approved by the Central Committee later this month, will be presented at the party’s national conclave in Madurai.
