(File Photo)Kerala Bypolls Election Results 2024 Highlights: In his first reaction after Priyanka Gandhi surpassed her brother Rahul Gandhi’s 2024 record of over 3.65 lakh vote margin in Wayanad and retained the seat, he said, “I feel immense pride as my family in Wayanad has placed its trust in Priyanka.” He added, “I know she will lead with courage, compassion, and unwavering dedication to transform our cherished Wayanad into a beacon of progress and prosperity.” Priyanka secured over six lakh votes, defeating Communist Party of India’s Sathyan Mokeri with a margin of over 4.1 lakh votes. Meanwhile, Congress candidate Rahul Mamkootathil has won the Palakkad seat by a margin of 18,840 votes against BJP candidate C Krishnakumar, who was ahead in the earlier rounds of the bypolls. Additionally, the ruling CPI(M)-led Left Democratic Front (LDF) received a big boost with its candidate U R Pradeep winning the Chelakkara Assembly bypoll by 12,000 votes.
Following her landmark victory, Priyanka Gandhi visited party president Mallikarjun Kharge at his residence, expressing her gratitude for his support throughout the campaign. She vowed to “fight for the issues” as the upcoming Parliament session begins. Taking to X (formerly Twitter), earlier, she said that she was “overwhelmed” by the victory, promising to “represent the hopes and dreams of Wayanad in Parliament.” She said, “I am deeply grateful for the trust you have placed in me… Thank you for this honour and, above all, for the immense love you’ve shown me.” She also thanked her family, campaign workers, and the UDF coalition. “To my brother, Rahul, you are the bravest of them all… thank you for showing me the way and having my back, always!”, she added.
What does this election mean for the Congress and the broader INDIA bloc? While these by-elections won’t directly impact state governance, they serve as a critical litmus test for Congress, especially after its recent struggles in Haryana. Congress had invested heavily in Priyanka’s campaign, focusing on local issues such as farmers’ challenges and the rehabilitation of landslide victims, while also addressing national concerns.
