The University of Kannur in Kerala has decided to open its doors for students from Manipur who could not continue their education due to the violence in their home state.
The decision was taken at a meeting of the university syndicate after taking into consideration pleas from various students’ organisations in Manipur.
Vice-chancellor Dr Gopinath Ravindran said the university was ready to admit students from Manipur in both undergraduate and postgraduate courses.
The V-C added that admission would be arranged in university departments as well as in affiliated colleges, depending upon the requirements of the students. “The university will allot special seats for Manipur students who are eligible for higher education, but could not continue due to the violence in the state. The university will also provide accommodation for the students getting enrolled into various programmes. The students admitted in Kannur University will be given the required time to furnish documents related to their eligibility,” he said.
A student from Manipur has already shown interest in joining a Masters in Physical Education and Sports course in the Physical Education Department, the V-C said.
“I think they (students from Manipur) have moved similar pleas with universities in other parts of the country also. Last month, a student from Manipur was given admission in class 3 in a government school in Thiruvananthapuram. Sensing that good gesture in Kerala, these college students seemed to have approached us,” he said.
