Some people holding constitutional posts are supporting hate crimes against Muslims in India, Jamaat-e-Islami Hind (JIH) said Saturday.
JIH vice president Prof Salim Engineer at a media conference condemned the practice of “bulldozer justice”, and lauded the top court’s stance against it.
“Sadly, anti-social elements are committing crimes without fear, seemingly supported and protected by individuals in constitutional positions. This allows them to carry out hate crimes without concern for arrest or punishment by the courts,” he said.
He urged the government to take swift action against it and ensure that those responsible are brought to justice. “This is an illegal and authoritarian practice… most of the homes being demolished belong to religious minorities, particularly Muslims,” he said.
Citing a recent statement from the bench of Justice B.R. Gavai and K.V. Viswanathan, he said: “Thankfully, a commendable remark from the Supreme Court came on a petition against these illegal demolitions, and steps have been taken to stop them… We hope the Court will issue guidelines nationwide on this matter,” he said.
