The BJP Thursday attacked the Hemant Soren government in Jharkhand over the reinstatement of IAS officer Pooja Singhal soon after she was released on bail in a money laundering case. Senior BJP leader Ravi Shankar Prasad hit out at Leader of Opposition and Congress MP Rahul Gandhi, an ally of the Soren government, for “roaming around with the Constitution in his hand”.

“…Jharkhand’s IAS officer Pooja Singhal was held for corruption. `16 crore were recovered from her CA. PMLA officials also recovered `36 crore in cash from her. She was in jail for the last 28 months. She got bail in December, and on January 21, her suspension was revoked, and she was reinstated. An IAS officer, against whom a trial is underway and a PMLA court has registered a case, and from whom crores of rupees were recovered, has been reinstated as soon as she got out of jail,” Prasad said at a press conference here.

“The Congress is also a part of the Jharkhand government, they have to answer what is happening. My question is to Rahul Gandhi, who roams around with the Constitution in his hand…,” he said.

The ED arrested Singhal in May 2022 in a case relating to irregularities in MNREGA, after which she was suspended. The suspension of Singhal, who was in jail for over two years, was revoked after she secured bail.

“In light of the recommendations made by the Suspension Review Committee after due consideration, Pooja Singhal, an IAS officer, has been reinstated with effect from December 7, 2024, following her release on bail,” said a Jharkhand government notification. Asked about the BJP’s allegations, former Jharkhand Congress president Rajesh Thakur said: “This decision (to reinstate Singhal) has been taken by a committee under the Chief Secretary. Every detail has been taken into account before taking the decision. In such a context, no partisan politics should be done.”

Another Jharkhand Congress leader said, “The BJP tried to trouble the Jharkhand government in the past… It is trying to politicise everything. We have understood that all this was part of the same agenda.”
