Janata Dal (United) not joining PM Modi-led cabinet

The JD(U), which is headed by Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, was not a part of the first Modi government as well. It had allied with the saffron party in 2017 but had not joined the government.

Janata Dal (United) leader Pavan Varma stated Thursday that his party shall not join Prime Minister Narendra Modi-led-BJP cabinet at the centre, PTI reported.

“We are not joining the government. This is our decision,” Varma, who is also the general secretary of the Janata Dal (United), was quoted as saying.

Also, Bihar chief minister and JD(U) supremo Nitish Kumar informed ANI that although there is no JD(U) leader in the Union cabinet, JD(U) and BJP shall work together.  “They wanted just one person from the JD(U) in the cabinet, so it would have been just a symbolic participation. We informed them that it is ok we don’t need it. It is not a big issue, we are fully in NDA and not upset at all. We are working together,no confusion,” ANI quoted the Bihar chief minister as saying.

The BJP was offering one cabinet berth to the JD(U) and sources informed PTI  that the regional party was also unhappy with the portfolio offered to it.

The JD(U), which is headed by Kumar, was not a part of the first Modi government as well. It had allied with the saffron party in 2017 but did not join the government.

There was no comment from the BJP over the development.
