A woman, who along with her lover, is on the death row for killing seven members of her family, including a 10-month-old, in 2008, has sent two separate mercy petitions — to President Pranab Mukherjee and UP Governor Ram Naik — seeking pardon on the ground of responsibilities towards her son, who was born in jail. The Supreme Court had upheld the death penalty imposed on the woman, Shabnam, and her lover, and later stayed the execution of the death sentence. Shabnam gave the mercy petitions to prison authorities Tuesday. The petitions have been dispatched to the Law Department.
