Members of Unemployed Linemen Association are once again ready to gherao SAD leaders at the upcoming Baisakhi conference in Talwandi Sabo,in case the Punjab State Power Corporation Limited (PSPCL) failed to release a “merit list” by April 10.

Earlier, during Maghi Mela, association members had held protests at the SAD conference and even blocked the main road outside the meeting venue in Muktsar. Following this,59 members were sent to Faridkot Jail. They were released after over a month.

“Tomorrow,PSPCL holding a board meeting to discuss our recruitment policy. If they fail to release a merit list by April 10,we will again do what we did during Maghi Mela. This time it will only be bigger,” union leader Harpreet Singh Marak said.

Association members claimed that while 5,000 linemen were scheduled to be recruited by PSPCL,the corporation has managed to give jobs to only 1,000 people. Despite the remaining clearing the recruitment drive, they have not been issued appointment letters, they added.

As per sources,PSPCL norms state that 35 is the cut off age for linemen to get a job in the general category. For reserved category,it is 40. However, the association members are demanding that the cut off age be raised to 50 for general and 55 for reserved. “With retirement age being 58 years, how many years will an employee serve if he joins at 55? Moreover,in linemen’s job,we need energetic people,” said a PSPCL official.

When contacted,PSPCL Chief Engineer (HRD) Suresh Kumar Gupta said: “The board will decide tomorrow about the recruitment.”
