Urban Ministry questions Delhi govt’s move to set up SEZs

The Centre has questioned the legality of SEZs in absence of any provision for the same in the Master Plan Delhi (MPD) 2021.

In a setback to Delhi Government’s plan to set up Special Economic Zones (SEZs),the Centre has questioned the legality of such zones in absence of any provision for the same in the Master Plan Delhi (MPD) 2021.

In a letter to the Delhi Government,the Union Urban and Development Ministry has recently asked the city authorities on what criteria SEZs will be set up in the national capital as there is no such area earmarked in the MPD 2021.

“Yes,we have received such a letter. It is certainly a setback to our Special Economic Zones plan. We are looking into the matter to find a way out,” said Delhi Chief Secretary Rakesh Mehta.

He said the two SEZ projects for IT Parks,and Gems and Jewellery to be executed by the government agency,Delhi State Industrial and Infrastructure Development Corporation (DSIIDC),will get affected unless the matter is sorted out with the Urban Development Ministry.

Mehta also said though private developers like DLF Commercial Developers Ltd and Consolidate Finvest and Holdings Ltd have expressed their inability to invest in the project citing financial crunch now,they would have to seek land use change permission from the land owning agency,DDA,before going ahead with their SEZ plans.

A senior Delhi official from the State Industries Department added that SEZs seems to be a difficult ball game for the national capital in view of legal complications as pointed by the Urban Development ministry.
