UP cops pin traffic offender to pillar,lash him with belt

Two constables suspended,inquiry to check for ‘police brutality’,man was detained for driving in wrong lane.

Two constables of the UP Police were suspended on Wednesday after they were caught on video beating a traffic offender with a belt. The footage shows policemen holding Lokesh Kumar’s hands stretched around a pillar inside the Kasna police station,in Greater Noida,and an officer lashing him with a belt.

Kumar was detained for allegedly driving his Maruti Swift on the wrong lane of the Greater Noida Expressway,around 2 pm on Wednesday.

No case has been registered against him and the Swift has not been impounded.

Senior police officers said Kumar was taken to the police station after he got into an argument with the constables on duty.

“Kumar’s car was flagged down by PCR number 61 around 2 in the afternoon because he was driving on the wrong side on the expressway at Pari Chowk,opposite Ansal Plaza. The car’s number plate read DL 3C BC 7141. After he came out of the car,he entered into an argument with the constables on duty,who then took him to Kasna police station. No case was filed and Kumar was let off after half an hour. Constables Lakhan Singh and Ashok Singh have been suspended,” a senior officer said.

The footage shows two policemen dragging Kumar to a pillar inside Kasna Kotwali. At least six policemen look on as two of them hold Kumar’s hands. One of them lashes Kumar on his legs at least 10 times as he cries out in pain and begs them to let him go.

As the policemen let go off his hands,Kumar slumps to the ground in tears with the policemen trying to pull him back on to his feet.

Police officers said Kumar is around 25 years of age and a resident of Kambakshpur village in Kasna. His father Shraddhanand Kumar owns a farmland in the area and Kumar looks after it.

Senior Superintendent of Police Praveen Kumar said,“Two constables have been suspended. The Superintendent of Police (Rural) will conduct an inquiry and strict action will be taken against those found guilty of any police brutality.”
