The UP ATS is preparing a report on methods of an alleged nationwide illegal arms racket it busted recently. The racket with links in at least two states, possibly more, was smuggling parts and assembling firearms in UP and Maharashtra for supply across the country.

The report containing descriptions and sketches of gun components passed off as computer parts will be sent to authorities across the country.

The racket was unearthed following the arrest of alleged mastermind Mohammed Khalid in Lucknow on April 19.

“We are preparing a detailed report based lessons learnt from this investigation. We are also ensuring sketches (of gun components passed off as computer parts) and terminology (used by the racketeers) are compiled and are sent to all agencies and international airports,” said additional DGP (law and order) Arun Kumar,UP.

Meanwhile,ATS is interrogating another accused Alwyn D’sa,who was taken to UP Wednesday night on a transit remand, for information on other members of the racket. Police believe Khalid would recruit firearms enthusiasts and use their technical knowledge.

“D’sa is a member of a number of shooting clubs and knows a lot about guns. We recovered transaction slips from his house that show money was deposited in his Mumbai account from Lucknow. We have seized his passport and sealed his bank accounts. Ravindra Shetty, another Mumbai resident whose name has come up during investigation,is also a gun enthusiast,” said sub-inspector Ravindra Singh,UP ATS.
