Two army personnel killed in avalanche in Pithoragarh

Two army-men, who lost their lives, were Havildar Santosh Singh and Pradeep Kumar.

Two jawans of Indian Army’s Kumayun Scouts were killed after an avalanche hit their barrack at Chiyalekh near Indo-Nepal border in the state’s Pithoragrah district. While four army personnel were injured, one jawan is reported to be missing. The incident occurred around 8 pm on Monday.

Two army-men, who lost their lives, were Havildar Santosh Singh and Pradeep Kumar. The injured army personnel are near the barrack site. On being contacted, Pithoragarh DM Sushil Kumar said there are different units of other para-military forces near the barrack site of Kumayun Scout. “They are taking care of the injured army personnel,” the DM replied to a question.

He added the district administration is in constant touch with the army to ensure proper co-ordination for rescue operation. He said the incident occurred around 8 pm yesterday. “An amy helicopter was sent to the site of damaged barrack today. However, the helicopter could not land there. According to him, there were seven jawans deployed at the barrack.

Sources said a team of 22 army personnel is on way to the barrack through trekking route. Reports reaching here from Pithoragarh said Kumayun Scout is a wing of the Indian Army and its two battalions are currently deployed in Pithoragarh near the Indo-Nepal border.
