Train accident kills nine in UP

At least nine people,eight of them teenagers,were killed and 15 injured when a speeding train ploughed through a tractor-trolley near Kanpur.

At least nine people,eight of them teenagers,were killed and 15 injured when a speeding train ploughed through a tractor-trolley at an unmanned railway crossing near Shivrajpur,50-km from from Kanpur on Tuesday.

The accident happened at around 0930 hrs,police said adding all the dead and the injured,most of them labourers,were occupants of the ill-fated tractor-trolley.

The train was travelling from Lucknow to Kasganj when it hit the tractor-trolley which was on its way from Uddhavpur Nawada to Jagdishpur.

The dead were a woman,four girls and an equal number of boys,all aged between 14 and 18 years,SP (Rural) Lal Bahadur said.

However,North-Eastern Railway Public Relations Officer Rajendra Singh said six people were killed and 10 were injured in the accident.

The SP rural,however,said “I was present at the scene and have sent all nine bodies for post mortem.” Asked if any compensation would be given to the victims,the PRO said “no”,adding a case would be registered against the tractor driver under the Indian Railways Act.

The condition of the four injured admitted to the Kanpur Medical College was critical,Kanpur Deputy Inspector General of Police Prem Prakash said.

The driver of the tractor-trolley,which was carrying around 35 people,fled after the accident,he said adding efforts were on to trace him.
