Acid was thrown on the face of a 22-year-old man allegedly caught stealing at Hasa village under Kisanpur police station in Supaul Tuesday night, partially damaging his right eye and cheek. He has been referred to Darbhanga Medical College and Hospital.
Two of the three accused have been arrested. They have lodged a counter-complaint against the alleged thief.
The police said Ranjit Sada, a Scheduled Caste daily wager from the adjoining Tharbitiya village, was allegedly caught stealing from the house of Ramnandan Yadav at 11 pm on Tuesday.
“The damage looks more serious in the right eye,” a local doctor said.
The alleged thief has lodged a complaint against Ramnandan and two members of his family, while Ramnandan has registered a theft case against him.
Supaul Superintendent of Police Manoj Kumar said: “We are getting divergent versions.”
Sada, whose vision in one eye has been partially impaired, said he had gone to the house of Ramnandan to demand his wages amounting to Rs 50. The police, however, are not convinced, considering it was 11 pm when he was caught.
