Bombay High Court (HC) asked the government Thursday to file an affidavit within a week stating the exact number of vacancies in the police force.

HC was responding to a PIL by Ashwini,wife of developer Nikhil Rane who was murdered in 2009,seeking a probe by an independent agency saying local police had failed to investigate the case due to manpower crunch.

In June 2011,the court transferred the case to CBI and subsequently converted her application into a PIL.
