BARC director and noted materials and technology scientist Srikumar Banerjee on Monday took over as the Atomic Energy Commission (AEC) chairman.
Banerjee took the charge from outgoing AEC chairman Anil Kakodkar in a small function at Anushakti Bhavan in South Mumbai.
63-year-old Banerjee joined BARC in 1967 as an officer of 11th batch of prestigious BARC Training School and went on to become its director in April 2004.
The veteran scientist did his B Tech and PhD from IIT-Kharagpur and has made outstanding contributions in many materials-related areas in both basic and applied sectors.
The Padmashri awardees work has also provided a basis for developing a novel fabrication schedule for pressure tubes used in the Indian Pressurised Heavywater Reactors (PHWRs).
He is a Fellow of Indian Academy of Sciences,Indian National Science Academy,National Academy of Sciences India,Indian National Academy of Engineering,Maharashtra Academy of Sciences and Third World Academy of Sciences.
