A police team led by trainee IPS officer Pratap Gopendra was allegedly attacked by local SP leader Ashok Verma and his men for taking action against illegal mining underway at Purakalandar police station area in Faizabad Wednesday night.
The SP leader reportedly misbehaved with the IPS officer who holds charge of station officer (SO) of the local police station while policemen accompanying him were assaulted by Verma’s supporters. IPS Pratap Gopendra said a majority of those who attacked the police were drunk.
Principal Secretary (Home) Deepak Singhal said, “I have sought details of the case from senior officials in Faizabad.”
Faizabad SSP KB Singh said a case has been registered against Verma and his supporters, five of whom have been arrested. Verma is yet to be arrested, he said. The IPS officer is the complainant in the case.
A JCB machine being used for mining and three tractors-trollies have been seized from the spot. Verma is a former Ayodhya assembly president of the party.
According to police report, the Purakalandar police were informed about illegal mining underway at Dadera village to extract soil. The IPS officer and the police team rushed to the spot and sought to know from people present there if they had any order from the district administration for digging the field, They, however, could not produce any such order and entered into a heated argument with Pratap and other policemen. They claimed the field belonged to them and that they require no such order.
As Pratap asked the policemen to seize the machines and the vehicles, people engaged in mining called associates from nearby village and informed local SP leader Ashok Verma.
Verma arrived there along with his supporters and they even misbehaved with the official. While Pratap called senior officials and sought additional police force, Verma’s supporters assaulted the policemen, the report said.
