Barring eight district units, SP state president and Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav Sunday dissolved party’s 85 district units “with immediate effect”. The action is seen as the fallout of the party’s poor performance in the Lok Sabha elections. The party has also dissolved district units of its 14 cells with immediate effect.
The eight district units which the party has retained include Firozabad, Mainpuri, Kannauj, Badaun, Azamgarh (the five seats it won in the elections) and Rampur, Amethi and Rae Bareli.
The SP did not field candidates in Rae Bareli and Amethi, giving a virtual walkover to Congress president Sonia Gandhi and vice-president Rahul Gandhi.
Although it lost in Rampur, the SP has not dissolved the local unit here as its members were chosen by Cabinet minister Azam Khan, also his home district.
The step follows the party’s similar act recently when it had dissolved its state executive, barring state president, and different frontal wings associated with it. According to party leaders, Akhilesh will soon form new teams in the districts with an eye on the Assembly elections.
